In January 1945, ten-year-old Holocaust survivor Marcel Zielinski made a treacherous 60-mile journey on foot from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Kraków, Poland, in search of his family. Decades later, 250 cyclists from 12 countries retraced his path in an empathetic mission called Ride for the Living, created and run by JCC Krakow. This powerful documentary draws parallels between Marcel’s harrowing experience and the cyclists’ journey, sparking an urgent conversation about our ongoing struggle between dehumanization and empathy.
This special screening will include the attendance of Co-Director Tim Roper and Producer Lisa Effress who will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A after the screening.

Documentary Film Screening: “Violins of Hope – Strings of the Holocaust”
Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody, Violins of Hope – Strings of the Holocaust follows Israeli master violinmaker Amnon Weinstein as he restores violins carried by starving Jewish refugees on death marches, played under coercion in concentration camps, and held close in ghettos and work camps—each instrument bearing witness to suffering, courage, and resilience. The film interweaves these histories with Weinstein’s mission to collect, repair, and return the violins to the world’s stages through performances by renowned musicians and orchestras, an act of love and defiance against those who tried to silence both the music and the people. Post-film conversation featuring Janet Horvath. Ms. Horvath was the associate principal cello of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1980-2012. Her new book, The Cello Still Sings – A Generational Story of the Holocaust and of the Transformative Power of Music, will be available for purchase and signing.

Minnesota Sinfonia in Performance
Artistic Director Jay Fishman and the Minnesota Sinfonia bring live music — and living history — to Sholom Home West in a free, open rehearsal as part of the Violins of Hope Minnesota residency. Sinfonia musicians will perform on instruments from the Violins of Hope collection: violins and other pieces rescued, restored, and carried through the Holocaust, now returned to song.
