SUMMARY:Architecture of Light - Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the closing of the Architecture of Light art exhibits featuring work by Claude Riedel & Sofia Davidson. Experience two powerful artistic voices brought together in a moving exploration of Jewish identity\, survival\, and hope. Together\, these exhibitions illuminate the power of light\, memory\, and resilience honoring the past while inspiring reflection for the future. \nClaude Riedel — On Display at both Minneapolis JCC Centers\nMinneapolis-based artist Claude Riedel is internationally recognized for crafting Ner Tamids (eternal lights) that hang above the ark in synagogues across the world. For more than 25 years\, Riedel has created singular works incorporating stained glass\, blown glass\, metalwork\, cast bronze\, and found objects. Rich with Judaic symbolism such as the Tree of Life\, the Burning Bush\, and the Star of David\, each Ner Tamid is uniquely designed for its architectural setting. Riedel’s work\, found in over 225 congregations globally\, reflects his vision: “A radiant purity of light which inspires and calms the spirit of the worshipper.” \nSofia Davidson — On Display at Sabes Center Minneapolis JCC\nSofia Davidson’s work tells the remarkable story of one woman’s survival as a Polish Jew during the Holocaust. Through deeply emotional and thought-provoking pieces\, visitors witness the strength and courage required to endure one of the darkest chapters in history\, while protecting her young daughter\, Hannah\, before herself. These works honor memory\, perseverance\, and the unbreakable human spirit. This traveling collection is made possible through the generosity of the Goldrich Family Foundation. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah Special Film Screening: For the Living
DESCRIPTION:In January 1945\, ten-year-old Holocaust survivor Marcel Zielinski made a treacherous 60-mile journey on foot from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Kraków\, Poland\, in search of his family. Decades later\, 250 cyclists from 12 countries retraced his path in an empathetic mission called Ride for the Living\, created and run by JCC Krakow. This powerful documentary draws parallels between Marcel’s harrowing experience and the cyclists’ journey\, sparking an urgent conversation about our ongoing struggle between dehumanization and empathy. \nThis special screening will include the attendance of Co-Director Tim Roper and Producer Lisa Effress who will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A after the screening. \nCOST: $14 GENERAL ADMISSION • $12 STUDENTS/SENIORS \nCLICK HERE for tickets. \nPresented in partnership by the Minnesota JCC and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC).

SUMMARY:U of M Center for Jewish Studies Lecture Series: Hannah Pollin-Galay (University of Massachusetts) Presents: What Did People Talk About in the Warsaw Ghetto? Yiddish Words of the Holocaust
DESCRIPTION:The Holocaust radically altered the way its victims–especially Yiddish speakers–spoke and communicated. Finding their prewar language incapable of describing the imprisonment\, death\, and dehumanization of the Shoah\, prisoners added or reinvented thousands of Yiddish words and phrases to describe their new reality. These crass\, witty\, and sometimes beautiful Yiddish words – Khurbn Yiddish\, or “Yiddish of the Holocaust” – puzzled and intrigued the East European Jews who were experiencing the metamorphosis of their own tongue. This talk will focus on the experience of language in the Warsaw ghetto\, looking at the new Yiddish words invented\, how people debated their meanings\, and why they felt it was so important to remember them. No knowledge of Yiddish required! \nBio: Hannah Pollin-Galay is Pen Tishkach Chair of Holocaust Studies\, the Director of the Institute for Holocaust\, Genocide and Memory Studies and Professor of Jewish Studies and History at the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. Her work explores East European Jewish Holocaust experience\, focusing on cultural production\, space\, gender\, interethnic relations and language identity. She is the author of Ecologies of Witnessing: Language\, Place and Holocaust Testimony (Yale University Press\, 2018) and Occupied Words: What the Holocaust Did to Yiddish (UPenn Press\, 2024)\, which won the 2024 National Jewish Book Award. Her articles have appeared in scholarly venues such as Jewish Quarterly Review and Holocaust and Genocide Studies\, as well as popular venues such as The Nation\, Boston Review and In Geveb. \nFREE \nCLICK HERE to register. \nCosponsors: Center for Austrian Studies\, Center for German and European Studies\, Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies\, Department of German\, Nordic\, Slavic & Dutch\, Department of History\, Holocaust and Genocide Studies Program at the University of St. Thomas\, Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies\, University of St. Thomas \nLectures will be held monthly on varying topics by different lecturers.

SUMMARY:Violins of Hope Exhibition at the Minnesota JCC: Violins and Hope - From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota JCC is proud to present Violins and Hope – From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall an extraordinary exhibition built around the internationally renowned project and its moving collection of restored string instruments once played by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust. Each violin carries a deeply personal story—bearing witness to one of history’s darkest chapters while honoring those who faced unimaginable adversity and the resilience of individuals who turned to music as a source of solace\, survival\, and defiance. \nThe exhibition also features work by Daniel Levin\, the first photographer to document— with remarkable depth—both the collection of violins that survived the Holocaust and the artful process of restoring them. Through hauntingly beautiful photographs and compelling text\, Violins and Hope – From the Holocaust to Symphony Hall brings these instruments and their histories into vivid presence\, inviting visitors to experience the violins up close\, learn about the musicians who once played them\, and engage in broader conversations about cultural memory\, the persistence of antisemitism\, and why remembrance matters. This exhibition is both a memorial and a celebration—of Jewish culture\, identity\, and the unbreakable human spirit. \nFREE \nOn display at the Minnesota JCC’s Capp Center in St. Paul and Sabes Center in Minneapolis from May 3 – June 29\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Music as Testimony: A Violins of Hope Gathering at Walker West
DESCRIPTION:Violins of Hope gives voice to Holocaust-era instruments whose music once sustained lives under unimaginable oppression\, now restored to bear witness through sound and story. This legacy resonates deeply with African American traditions that have long used music to survive\, remember\, and assert humanity in the face of injustice. At Walker West\, this gathering calls our community to listen\, reflect\, and honor music’s power to preserve dignity across generations. \nSpecial Guests: \nAvshi Weinstein\, Violins of Hope Co-Founder \nErnest Bisong\, Artistic Director – Walker West \nCOST: FREE \nNo registration required.

SUMMARY:Westminster Town Hall Forum Ethics & Story: Violins of Hope
DESCRIPTION:On November 17\, 1983\, Elie Wiesel began his Westminster Town Hall Forum speech “Why Hate?” on memory and the Holocaust by saying\, “The best thing one can do at noon on a Thursday is to tell stories.” \nNow\, more than 42 years later\, we gather anew to consider the power of stories and the role of music and memory by welcoming Violins of Hope\, presented by the Minnesota JCC. Violins of Hope is a powerful collection of over 70 restored string instruments played by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust. These extraordinary violins will be featured in May – June 2026 in local performances\, exhibitions\, and educational programs that honor the memory of the Holocaust and carry a message of hope\, resilience\, resistance\, and unity. Our Forum will feature some of these instruments and will weave together their stories with music played on them\, as we consider the role of story and storytelling in defending human rights and human dignity. \nWith Special Guests: Rabbi Marcia A. Zimmerman of Temple Israel\, Avshi Weinstein of Violins of Hope\, and Rev. Dr. Jessica Patchett of Westminster Presbyterian Church. \nDoors: 11 AM\nMusic: 11:30 AM\nForum: 12 PM \nA free public reception will immediately follow the program. \nCOST: FREE\nNo registration required. \nCLICK HERE for more info.
