SUMMARY:Minnesota JCC Symphony Orchestra Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota JCC Symphony Orchestra presents: Lives and Landscapes \nLives and Landscapes explores the close relationship between people and the places they inhabit. Liz Lane’s Ruby Fanfare opens the concert with a bright\, communal energy\, celebrating shared spirit and collective voice. Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture draws listeners to the rugged Scottish coast\, where sweeping seascapes reflect both the power of nature and the human response to it. The program concludes with Goldmark’s Rustic Wedding Symphony\, a vivid portrait of village life in which folk-inspired melodies and festive rhythms bring everyday celebration\, tradition\, and community to life. Together\, these works remind us that landscapes shape human experience\, and that music gives lasting voice to the lives lived within them. \nCOST: FREE ($15 suggested donation) \nCLICK HERE for tickets. \nQuestions? Email Risa Cohen at risac@minnesotajcc.org. \nTHE MINNESOTA JCC SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IS PRESENTED BY THE MARVIN J. PERTZIK JEWISH CULTURAL ARTS DEPARTMENT\, WHICH IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED\, IN PART\, BY THE MINNESOTA JCC FOUNDATION.

SUMMARY:U of M Center for Jewish Studies Lecture Series: A Jewish Language for All Occasions: Ladino Culture and Its Innovations
DESCRIPTION:While Yiddish expressions pepper American English and great Yiddish novels are celebrated still today\, comparatively little is known about Ladino and the cultural world it shaped from 1492 until World War II in the lands of the former Ottoman Empire. While spoken today by relatively few people in the United States\, Europe\, and Israel\, Ladino (also known as Judezmo and Judeo-Spanish) melded Jewish\, Iberian\, and eastern Mediterranean cultures to produce a new and vibrant language that permeated every aspect of Jewish life in Greece\, Turkey and the Balkans. This lecture delves into the defining features of the Ladino language as a source of Sephardic resilience and adaptation after the expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula through the creation of serious and humorous Ladino folk culture\, and the production of key works of Ladino literature\, both religious and secular. \nBio: Devin E. Naar is an associate professor of History and Jewish Studies and chair of the Sephardic Studies Program at the University of Washington in Seattle. His first book\, published by Stanford University Press\, Jewish Salonica: Between the Ottoman Empire and Modern Greece\, won a 2016 National Jewish Book Award and the prize for best book from the Modern Greek Studies Association. His current book project explores the history of Sephardic Jews from the Ottoman Empire in the United States during the twentieth century. \nFREE \nCLICK HERE to register. \nCosponsors: Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies\, Department of History\, Institute for Global Studies\, Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies\, University of St. Thomas \nLectures will be held monthly on varying topics by different lecturers.

SUMMARY:Architecture of Light - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of the Architecture of Light art exhibits featuring work by Claude Riedel & Sofia Davidson. Experience two powerful artistic voices brought together in a moving exploration of Jewish identity\, survival\, and hope. Together\, these exhibitions illuminate the power of light\, memory\, and resilience honoring the past while inspiring reflection for the future. \nClaude Riedel — On Display at both Minneapolis JCC Centers\nMinneapolis-based artist Claude Riedel is internationally recognized for crafting Ner Tamids (eternal lights) that hang above the ark in synagogues across the world. For more than 25 years\, Riedel has created singular works incorporating stained glass\, blown glass\, metalwork\, cast bronze\, and found objects. Rich with Judaic symbolism such as the Tree of Life\, the Burning Bush\, and the Star of David\, each Ner Tamid is uniquely designed for its architectural setting. Riedel’s work\, found in over 225 congregations globally\, reflects his vision: “A radiant purity of light which inspires and calms the spirit of the worshipper.” \nSofia Davidson — On Display at Sabes Center Minneapolis JCC\nSofia Davidson’s work tells the remarkable story of one woman’s survival as a Polish Jew during the Holocaust. Through deeply emotional and thought-provoking pieces\, visitors witness the strength and courage required to endure one of the darkest chapters in history\, while protecting her young daughter\, Hannah\, before herself. These works honor memory\, perseverance\, and the unbreakable human spirit. This traveling collection is made possible through the generosity of the Goldrich Family Foundation. \nQuestions?
